What if We, Too, Move in Dark Water? (1-4)
My sculptural work frequently recalls the body, the animal world, symbols, and archetypes to transport into the realm of the unconscious, inviting associations and visceral responses. My ceramic pieces often employ slab construction alongside detailed sculpting, and I utilize subtractive methods such as carving. Formulating and applying glazes and natural pigments creates a dimensionality and texture that blurs the line between real and surreal.?My process is a means of transmuting personal, internal realities, as well as the broad and external to create a portal through which to delve into a world of connection and movement. Though the motifs I explore are often existential, the tone can be playful and soft. Certain observations can only be achieved by imbuing essence into objects and material. Clay as a sculptural medium is especially apt to reveal the tension between coexisting and seemingly opposing notions such as strength and fragility, impermanence and artifact, ultimately enacting the chemical transformation of turning something soft into stone. This series seeks to express the movement and mystery of the underwater world and invite connections within the human experience.
