Haron and Poppies
This painting is an exploration of contrasts—both visual and symbolic. The heron, with its sleek and elegant form, stands in stark contrast to the rich, vibrant poppies and the stark finality of the skull. The tension between life and death, beauty and decay, is at the heart of this composition.

I have long been inspired by the old Dutch masters, whose works were rich in symbolism and dramatic lighting. This painting embraces that tradition, drawing from the **vanitas** genre, which reminds us of the transient nature of life. The heron, often a symbol of wisdom, patience, and solitude, interacts with the skull—a universal emblem of mortality. Meanwhile, the red poppies serve as both a striking visual element and a symbol of remembrance, sleep, and the passage of time.

Does the heron mourn the skull? Is it merely a passive observer of decay? Or does it see something we do not? These questions fuel the painting’s eerie yet beautiful atmosphere.

In this competition, i want show a testament to my love for classical painting, the macabre, and the timeless power of visual storytelling.
