In this woodcut the humpback whale is the steward for the history of 2 important mountains - El Capitan and Ama Dablam from the Himalayas. The whale's song tells the history of these mountains and is written using actual music notations assigned to the humpback whale song and presented as sheet music. This work was inspired by the humpback whale song scored by scientists and initially published in Science magazine in August 1971 but republished by the Smithsonian.
