Eastern Egg Rock
Through a series of historic conservation efforts, Atlantic Puffins were able to reestablish a breeding colony on Eastern Egg Rock in Maine. When I visited the colony, I learned that one common method used to attract birds to an area is sound playback. When birds sing, their song can be graphically recorded by researchers as spectrograms, displaying the intensity and frequency of the sound. The Atlantic Puffin can rarely be heard producing a strange series of grunts from within its burrow. The spectrogram of this sound is displayed as a band about four inches from the bottom of the piece. To view the spectrogram and to hear the Puffin's call, please visit the link below (skip to 25 sec)
