The King of Texas

The King of Texas, Drawing and Pastels
The King of Texas
Graphite pencil drawing on a two inch cradled Claybord panel, sealed and varnished so that it is presented in a contemporary format without a frame.
My work, though highly realistic and often called "photographic" in appearance, goes beyond that basic level. I strive to create a portrait of my subject that takes the viewer inside it to gain an insight or emotional connection. I place the object of my work into a setting that is outside of its expected environment, as in this case with the longhorn where it's as though the animal is sitting for a formal portrait in a studio, rather than its normal environs of a pasture or barn. This is true with each of my subjects, whether they are animals, trees, or even landscapes or inanimate objects. I want the viewer to see more than just a picture. I want them to feel a connection.
