Big Mama
Graphite pencil drawing on a two inch cradled Claybord panel, sealed and varnished so that it is presented in a contemporary format without a frame.
My work, though highly realistic and often called "photographic" in appearance, goes beyond that basic level. I strive to create a portrait of my subject that takes the viewer inside it to gain an insight or emotional connection. By placing my subjects in a setting that is not necessarily an expected environment, they become more formal. It's almost as though they have come into the studio to sit for a formal portrait rather than just a representation of them in their usual environs. This is true with each of my subjects, whether they are animals, trees, or even landscapes or inanimate objects. I want the viewer to see more than just a picture. I want them to feel a connection.
